Does lack of sleep damage our brain?

bezsenność a pamięć

Insufficient rest and memory problems.

Lack of rest, problems falling asleep and nocturnal awakenings are the main causes of many health problems. In addition to possible problems such as depression, obesity, migraines and a worsened sense of well-being, sleep problems can also cause long-term memory problems.

It can be said that lack of sleep destroys the human mind. As early as 1924, it was discovered that people who sleep longer remember better. Insufficient restorative sleep is also a proven cause of increased levels of beta amyloid, which is responsible for the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

A team of researchers from the Dutch University of Groningen and the University of Pennsylvania in the US has shown that poorer sleep affects the shortening of dendrites and dendritic spines in the hippocampus. This is the region of the human brain responsible, among other things, for the consolidation of memories.

Sleep problems are even more serious in the elderly. In a study conducted by AP Spira, AA Gamaldo and Y. An, 70 adults aged between 53 and 91 were interviewed in 2013. The study confirmed the link between sleep disorders and long-term memory status.

Today, there is little doubt that sleep disorders lead to structural changes in the brain. People who suffer from sleep deprivation over a long period of time risk literally losing some of the memories that are, after all, so precious. In addition, problems with recognising the faces of acquaintances, increased irritability, depression and reduced immune defences due to a decreased functionality of the immune system may occur.

Now is the time to take care of a healthy sleep: a healthy lifestyle, good habits and a comfortable mattress.

Although some people may have a sleep disorder that should be treated with medication, the vast majority of people do not get enough sleep because of bad habits. As a society, we do less and less exercise and physical activity. A healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, is the first thing to change in order to get more restful sleep. It is also a good idea to change habits: do not use the TV and computer for an hour before going to bed, get enough rest, and do not eat anything before resting.

However, choosing the right sleeping surface is crucial. Often the wrong mattress is responsible for waking up and finding it difficult to fall asleep. For this reason, it is worth choosing a special thermo-elastic mattress made of special fibres and equipped with a multilayer system of thermo-elastic foams filled with millions of air chambers. This exerts uniform pressure on every part of the body, ensuring a comfortable rest in the right position. The thermo-elastic mattress is also hypoallergenic, prevents the growth of dust mites and absorbs excess moisture during sleep.

Memory problems due to lack of sleep have the worst consequences in the elderly, but everyone is at risk. To avoid future problems, analyse and change your current habits now and equip yourself with a safe mattress that guarantees a comfortable sleep.
